#535 - Andre Gray | You Don’t Know sh*t… And That’s Your Advantage

March 18, 2026·38 min·2 clips
Gray argues Black cultural fluency already trains people to read what will hit before they can explain it.
Andre Gray starts with the end. The host asks how he broke into advertising, what he is doing now, and what advice he has for the next generation. Gray does not linger on a tidy career story. He turns the conversation toward people trying to get into the industry right now, and his point is pretty direct: stop pretending you already know how agency life works. A high school internship, a resume line, or a sharp interview does not mean someone understands the job yet. Gray is not scolding young applicants for that. If anything, he treats not knowing as the honest starting point. Even experienced people are still learning, usually from people who have been around longer. Some of the job only makes sense once you are inside it. Then he flips the advice around. Newer talent may not know the agency machine, but they do know their own life, their internet, and the culture they grew up inside. Older leaders may not share those instincts. Gray makes that feel practical, not precious. He remembers hearing about Facebook on a visit to Trinity College in Connecticut, back when access still ran through a college email. A few years either way and the relationship to social media changes. The conversation keeps circling that idea through age, taste, media, work, and culture. Football becomes the easy example. Gray does not have to like football, or the Eagles, to talk with someone from Philadelphia and find enough common ground for a real conversation. That brings the episode back to communication: relating, speaking clearly, and articulating what you mean. The mood stays loose, like an ad-world hallway chat that accidentally turns useful because Gray has no interest in sounding polished for its own sake.
