3E Leadership Check-In: : How to Align Teams When Everyone Is Tired and Budgets Are Tight

·23 min·1 clip
The biggest real problem is alignment of communication and organizational priorities.
Happy holidays, full start. The room opens loose: a fake drink, a glass of Introvert Cabernet from California, and a LaCroix because Colorado weather might make the day practical in a hurry. Then the work topic shows up. The hosts move into what teams can do when December is almost done, coverage is thin, morale is slow, and everyone is trying not to make the week harder than it needs to be. Quiet can help. If the next stretch is already light, protect it instead of cramming in last-minute changes. Look back before January starts. The questions are simple enough to be useful: how did the rest of December go, how did last year go, and did the team actually meet the priorities it named. Emergencies matter here. More of them, or fewer, can tell you whether planning held up, whether people stayed aligned, and whether communication was steady. The audience side gets some attention too. If messaging has drifted, the slower window gives teams a chance to catch it before the new year starts moving. Do not roll out weird things. That lands because coverage is light, people are tired, and surprise changes create noise nobody needs. If work was already scheduled and cannot move, focus on that instead of piling more around it. Less noise makes the picture clearer. The episode keeps coming back to the annoying truth: obvious communication advice still takes discipline. Check-ins are not automatically meetings. A weekly touchpoint can help, but a one-hour meeting is not the only way to learn what someone is doing. Pick the tool for the job. Planning, looking ahead, and coordinating across a larger organization may need real meeting time. Simple status gathering usually does not. They close by pointing listeners to Monday afternoon weeklies, once-a-month livestreams with Q&A, a downloadable do-it-yourself assessment, and call it their last session of the year before returning in 2026.
