Full-Time vs. Fractional CFO: When should a founder hire one?

·39 min·2 clips
Scott frames venture math as a “triple double” and walks through a $2 million ARR example.
Melissa talks with Scott C. Hahn. He founded Mod4 Finance, and the conversation centers on outsourced accounting and CFO work for B2B tech companies. The real question is fit. Scott keeps coming back to when a founder needs CFO-level help, and when outsourced support can handle the business just fine. For him, it comes down to scope. The right answer depends less on title and more on the exact finance work the company needs done. Monthly reporting still matters. Founders should expect books closed on time, reconciliations, a written narrative, and a KPI dashboard that makes the business easier to read. Pricing should be clear. His preference is a fixed recurring fee with a clear statement of work, so ongoing work does not drift into open-ended hourly billing. Extra scope gets handled separately. When a company needs to raise capital or take on a larger project, he wants that work scoped on its own and priced accordingly. He sees strong signals early. The companies he describes as most promising were already compounding quickly, often with very little outside investment, by the time he joined them. He came in around the $3 million revenue mark. From there, he watched those businesses keep growing. The advice stays practical. Instead of startup mythology, the episode stays with cash efficiency, runway, reporting discipline, and what a founder is actually buying. The takeaway is narrow. It is most useful for founders deciding whether finance belongs in-house, on retainer, or still a little farther down the road.

Scott C. Hahn treats outsourced finance help as an operating choice, not just a job title. The conversation moves from bookkeeping and monthly reporting into fundraising support, KPI dashboards, and wider advisory work, especially when set against hiring a CFO.
