Critical Darlings: Sentimental Value and Belated Oscar Breakthroughs with Joe Reid

February 26, 2026·1 hr 19 min·5 clips

The hosts praise Joachim Trier for writing outside his immediate lived experience, which is increasingly rare in the autobiographical auteur era.

The hosts and guest Joe Reid analyze Joachim Trier's Oscar-nominated film 'Sentimental Value', exploring why filmmakers often receive major Academy attention for a later, more conventional work rather than their initial critical breakthrough. They debate its awards season trajectory, the politics of the International Feature category, and the film's themes of family, artistry, and generational legacy.
