Billy & Lisa in the Morning: The After Show

Life With Ryley...

·24 min·2 clips
Riley wears a headband because her hair is greasy from daily headphones at work.
It starts mid-story. Someone is tucked into a little cubby, listening while people search cabinets and ask where he went. His heart is racing. Then he gets found, and that small, flat ending is pretty much the point. Nobody tries to dress it up. The room just moves on. Someone asks what is happening in her world, and the answer is mostly nothing, except she is honestly excited for the Olympics. Football does not take. She says she tries every year to become a football person, gets bored, and ends up watching something else. One year, it was F1. The Super Bowl matters mostly because Bad Bunny is doing halftime, and she may check out once that part is over. Hockey gets real interest. So does figure skating, especially Ilya Malinin, the quad guy who can do a backflip on ice. The host is skeptical but curious. She says she will send a video, then explains that Malinin skated to a song by NF, though she is not totally sure what to call the genre. The host knows NF and says he sat in the studio. Rapper, from Detroit. That settles it. Then he reaches for Blades of Glory and jokes that he expected My Humps instead. She misses it, which somehow makes the bit better.

As heard by us

A relaxed review of Olympic excitement, sports detours, and the small enthusiasms that pull a conversation off its expected path.

This single-episode review draws its charm from the way everyday interests steer a conversation. A memory of hiding in a cubby shifts into excitement around the Olympics, where football gives ground to F1, Olympic hockey, and Olympic figure skating.

Why you'd press play

Press play when Olympic figure skating sounds more tempting than football and a hiding-in-a-cubby story feels like a proper opening.
