With 12 minutes left and Kentucky down six, Cole Park started writing his game story predicting a Wildcat victory.
The men's schedule finally takes a breath. Gabriel opens with Kentucky's so-called bye week, meaning no midweek men's game before Saturday afternoon at Florida. The women still play. He sends listeners toward Thursday night's Texas A&M game at Memorial Coliseum, with Darren Hedrick on the 6:15 pregame before the 6:30 tip. Then the room gets bigger. Cole Park comes in to sort through the Tennessee comeback, the kind of game that sticks because Tennessee looked so different in the first half. Tennessee looked scary early. Park and Gabriel use that first-half version as a measuring stick, then turn back to what Kentucky has to deal with next. Florida is the headache. Gabriel says the Gators are playing their best basketball, and Park says KenPom makes this Kentucky's toughest matchup of the year. Eighteen percent is a hard number to dress up. It leaves Kentucky as the clear underdog in Gainesville, so Park says a loss is the safe pick. But Kentucky keeps making that hard to say with a straight face. The same team that looked rough after Vanderbilt went to Arkansas and won while leading for much of the game. That keeps the door open. Park does not call the upset, exactly, but he does not slam it shut either. Gabriel shifts cleanly from there. After giving Park only a little Super Bowl grief, he gets to the Celtics' two-year deal with Amari Williams and lets Park explain why Boston could work for him. The local thread stays in place. Sean Woods and Gary Moore are lined up later for the comeback, coaching talk, and the Kentucky memory bank this show likes to keep nearby. Bob Knight comes up too. Gabriel notes Indiana's plan for a campus statue, credits the work, and does not ignore the argument over how it was done. The close is pure station radio: Gary Moore checks in from his warm den and man cave, Gabriel previews a shorter Thursday show before women's basketball, and the night signs off from the garage in Lexington.
