Esther names Haman as the enemy after the king offers her up to half his kingdom.
Sarah and Abraham open the story with God's covenant. The Lord changes Abram's name to Abraham and Sarai's name to Sarah, and the promise points ahead to many descendants. Abraham falls face down in reverence. God tells him to look toward the stars and says his children will be as many as the heavens. Abraham believes what God has promised. Sarah also receives the promise of a son, though the news sounds impossible because of their age. The story then moves to Ruth, whose loyalty to Naomi leads her into a new future. Boaz seeks to do what is right at the town gate before taking Ruth as his wife. When the nearer kinsman redeemer steps aside, Boaz brings Ruth the good news. Ruth and Boaz are married and later have a son named Obed. Obed becomes the father of Jesse, and Jesse becomes the father of David. Hannah's story follows with a quieter kind of suffering. She is grieved because she has no children while Peninnah taunts her year after year. At the house of the Lord, Hannah pours out her soul in prayer and promises to give her son back to God. Eli first misunderstands her distress, then blesses her in peace. The final section turns to Esther and Mordecai after a deadly decree threatens the Jews. Because the king's seal cannot be undone, Esther begs for a way to protect her people. A new decree is written so the Jews may gather and defend themselves against any army that attacks them. The decree is sealed with the king's signet ring and sent to every city and province. The episode ends in joy, because God's people celebrate that their lives have been saved.
