The Pilgrim Church - an audiobook - Chapter 9 (part four)

April 8, 2026·31 min·2 clips
A 25-year-old Anabaptist teacher in Cologne was repeatedly tortured but refused to reveal his congregation's names, then beheaded, while his wife wrote him a verse urging him to hold to the truth.
Sectarianism is treated as a narrowing of vision. The reading opens with a warning: a real piece of divine revelation can be defended so tightly that another scriptural truth gets pushed aside. The problem is not unbelief. It is building a sect around one part of the word while losing the wider balance of Scripture. The chapter then follows a man whose study moves from doctrine as something proclaimed to doctrine as inward persuasion. His confidence rests in Scripture. When he cannot understand a passage, he does not blame the text. He names human ignorance as the weak point. A later experience deepens the change. Assurance of salvation, a sense of sin, and gratitude for Christ's death and resurrection reshape his will and mind. Church order becomes obedience, too. He reads Acts as instruction for reform, not only as sacred history. The question gets practical: where are the assemblies that acknowledge Christ as head and yield to the Holy Spirit's rule? The close moves into dispute. Schwenkfeld criticizes believers who gather as churches and practice baptism and the breaking of bread. Marbeck answers at length, quoting Schwenkfeld and giving a hundred replies. He rejects the claim that the brethren condemn Christians who differ on baptism. Chapter 9 ends with a careful boundary between conviction and judgment: church practice matters, but that does not give anyone authority to condemn every dissenting believer.

As heard by us

A steady reading on how truth can harden into sectarianism.

Laura's reading of Chapter 9, Part 4 keeps sectarianism and truth in careful balance. It makes a clear case that a real truth can narrow into something limiting when it is defended so tightly that other parts of Scripture are pushed aside or denied.
