#055 — How to Get Paid for Your Expertise, Not Your Shopping List - with Deborah Flate

·44 min·4 clips
Transparency becomes the pressure point. The guest argues that designers do not need to hide behind product secrecy when clients are paying for experience, judgment, and fewer mistakes. Simple enough, until the sofa problem shows up. A designer spends hours researching, the client finds the piece somewhere else, and suddenly the work feels unpaid. The host frames the better version as a circle between manufacturer, showroom, salesperson, designer, and client, where information moves cleanly and nobody has to play detective. Secrets make that setup weak. The guest remembers designers hiding client names in binders, as if the showroom could not be trusted with the project. She does not buy it. With the internet, ChatGBT, and AI making information easier to find, old markup games feel harder to explain and harder to keep alive. So name the money. If a designer needs twenty percent, ten percent, or another fee during realization or construction, say it plainly. That changes the job. The designer stops acting like a source list and starts leading the project before the product conversation takes over. The couch story still stings: a client can ask whether an online listing is the same piece, hear yes, and order it elsewhere anyway. But the episode keeps returning to the business lesson: did the client learn to value the expertise, or only the access to things? Do not be a screwdriver. Build trust before secrecy has to do the work.
