Beyond Interior Design Podcast: For Interior Designers Who Want More · Marc Müskens

#039 - The Future of Interior Design — with Designer & TEDx Speaker Marie-Gon

·1 hr 1 min·3 clips
Marie-Gon says trends waste interior designers’ power unless they make a client’s character visible in the room.
Trends are the problem here. The guest pushes back on design that stops at fashion, because she sees interiors as a way to bring out the person who lives or works there. Style still counts. It just has to carry something real: the resident, the room, the office, the building, or the brand. The host follows her path through design, styling, set dressing, training, hospitality spaces, books, and fair direction, then the conversation gets practical. The best bit is the card exercise. Clients sort colors and choices until only the cards they both want are left. That little pile matters. Out of 150 cards, the guest says a couple may keep only 10 or 15, but that overlap gives the designer a place to start. It changes the room, sure. It also changes the conversation, because shared choices calm the back-and-forth and give everyone something solid to work from. The reason usually comes later. When the host asks whether people can explain their preferences, the guest says they often cannot do it right away. They just feel it. More questions bring the associations out, sometimes back to childhood, memory, or youth. That is the useful brief. The episode keeps circling one point: designers do not have to hide behind trend talk when they can make identity visible. The close has some bite. Designers are pushed to stand up, use their design powers, and create spaces that support freedom and a more positive future.

As heard by us

Design trends matter less here than the feeling a room can give back.

Marie Gomes presents interior design as a way to let character show through, rather than letting trends smooth it out. The discussion keeps moving between color choices, couple-by-couple preference matching, and those small turns where taste opens onto memory and feeling.
