It's gonna take a lot of... ummm nevermind

April 9, 2026·4 min
The episode opens by introducing twelve high school students from Pacific Palisades who are tackling environmental waste from tennis and pickleballs. These students launched Another Bounce, a campaign with the goal of setting a world record for collecting racket sport balls for recycling. Their initiative addresses the estimated 500 million non-biodegradable balls discarded into landfills each year, which can take over 400 years to decompose. The campaign will culminate in an Earth Day collection event on April 19th. The students have partnered with Ridwell in Los Angeles, which processes the balls by shredding, washing, and pelletizing them. The recycled plastic is then shipped to Merlin Plastics to create products like nursery plant pots and carpeting. Additionally, some balls are sent to Bounce Back Pickle in Florida, which breaks down plastic to make new pickleballs. The students advocate for a circular model where ball companies implement take-back programs, similar to electronics manufacturers. They joined the California non-profit Habits of Waste as junior board members and launched an email campaign targeting major manufacturers Penn, Wilson, Franklin, Dunlop, and Selkirk. Sheila Monrovati, founder of Habits of Waste, praises youth leadership as a powerful force for change; she previously set a Guinness record for collecting over a million pills. The students were motivated after seeing bins overflowing with discarded balls at courts in Southern California. They are collecting balls within a 30-mile radius of Pacific Palisades and nationally through shipments. Beyond collection, they speak at city council meetings in cities like Beverly Hills and Santa Monica to advocate for recycling ordinances. They now have a warehouse in Santa Monica at 3031st Street, Suite C, for donations. The Guinness World Record they aim to beat is 1,000 tennis balls, with no existing record for pickleballs. The episode concludes with the host reflecting on the story and encouraging listeners to make a positive impact.
