Celtics/Hawks Game 2 Preview + The Return of Jam

·36 min·3 clips

Sam returns from a 102-degree fever to defend himself against Jay's accusation of being a 'bad teammate' on the Celtics podcast.

The episode opens with Sam Packard returning from a five-day illness to address Jay King's accusation that he was a 'bad teammate' for missing the previous podcast. They quickly transition to analyzing the Celtics' Game 1 victory over the Hawks, critiquing Atlanta's porous defense that allowed easy layups to Jalen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Derrick White. Sam highlights the Celtics' effective use of small ball, with Derrick White starting over Robert Williams to improve spacing and offensive flow. Jay notes that White's 24-point, 7-assist performance, including pull-up threes, represents a significant evolution from last season. The hosts discuss how this lineup change keeps Robert Williams healthier and enhances bench depth. Jay then shares a detailed account of interviewing Joe Mazzulla's jiu-jitsu instructor, Alex Costa, revealing that Mazzulla began training immediately after becoming head coach and that Costa secretly commuted from Denver. Caller Josh B. apologizes for mocking Jay's support of the Sacramento Kings, acknowledging De'Aaron Fox's strong playoff performance. Josh then asks if the Celtics' third-quarter lapse in Game 1, where they allowed a Hawks run, mirrors regular-season inconsistencies that could hurt them against tougher opponents like the Sixers or Nuggets. Jay downplays the concern, attributing it to a natural letdown after a 30-point lead and emphasizing the Celtics' ability to 'flip the switch' when needed. The conversation touches on the Bucks-Heat series, with Sam expressing relief that the Celtics face the Hawks instead of the Heat. They conclude by planning to find a Hawks enthusiast for the next episode to debate the series' outcome, with both hosts expecting a Celtics sweep.
