Am I Dead Yet?

·20 min
Helen is in a coma. The emergency ward tries to work out who she is while Helen, inside her own head, wants to know where she is and Janie looks for her with Jennifer beside her. The episode opens with ordinary kindness. A cup of tea, a quick lock up, and an offer to come along set the tone before the search turns into a scramble. Dr. Godley steps in. He calls Janie from St Helier's emergency department after Helen's phone turns up her number as the emergency contact and tries to keep the conversation moving while she asks whether her mother is conscious. The answers stay partial. That limited information, plus the doctor being pulled back to the department, keeps the scene clipped and uneasy rather than melodramatic. The hospital has its own small complications. A young man with a broken leg who came off his electric scooter is mentioned in the background, adding to the sense that the place is busy, distracted, and always one conversation away from another problem. The episode also cuts to a party at the Old Wellington pub in Manchester, where Patty's engagement party becomes the setting for a wary exchange between a woman and Philip, who follows her outside and is immediately told off for it. The banter is all suspicion and counter suspicion. He asks about smoking, she answers like he has already annoyed her, and the back and forth turns on tiny social corrections. The names keep wobbling. Helen and Ellie, and the question of who is actually being addressed, become part of the joke. The comedy comes from people insisting on ordinary rules while the situation has already drifted past ordinary. That makes the episode feel domestic even when the stakes are serious. It is full of tea, wine, phones, apologies, and the kind of talk that keeps circling around the thing nobody wants to say directly. The result is a dry, tender scramble in which confusion, politeness, and alarm keep sharing the same room.

As heard by us

A coma, a hospital search, and tea-fueled awkwardness keep the episode tightly wound.

Helen's coma gives the episode its backbone: she is in an emergency ward, the staff are trying to figure out who she is, and Janie is looking for her with help from neighbor Jennifer.
