The Jerk, Too (1984) - DIRECT FROM HELL REVIEW

March 5, 2026·39 min·2 clips
They call The Jerk, Too a “pseudo sequel slash pilot for a television series” that never got picked up.
The intro is all house style. After the show plug and the Movie Smash promo, Michael E. Cullen II introduces his cohost with a ridiculous made-up name, and the bit immediately starts feeding itself. The tattoo joke keeps going until it becomes a forehead packed with layer after layer of weekly ink. Then the thread slips. Suddenly they are talking about school pen pals, old letters, and why anyone would still have copies sitting around. Dr. Mario becomes the little object everyone can point at. One host remembers writing to an Australian pen pal mostly about video games, including a Christmas wish the other kid apparently did not care about. It is such a tiny joke, which is why it works. It feels less like filler than the show catching a thought in real time. Childhood sneaks in through the side door. The pun about kids being jerks opens a brief, more serious patch about school, boredom, blocked memories, and having the shape of a feeling instead of clean scenes to retell. Nobody sands it smooth. They correct themselves, agree fast, back away from making it too heavy, and let the memory stay a little blurry. That unfinished quality is the hook. Two people let trivia, bits, and personal static crowd the movie for a while, and the episode is better for it. The closing audio shifts into ads. Athletic Brewing, Real California Milk, and a Netflix baseball promo come in as a tight block, which makes the loose middle feel even more like the real show. This is not tidy criticism. It is a conversation where the odd childhood memory gets to sit there without being turned into a lesson.
