Hip Deep in Madagascar: Songs of the North

December 3, 2025·59 min·4 clips
A 78-year-old eyewitness explains how a Creole exclamation at a 1945 victory parade may have named the entire Salegui genre.
November is cold. Georges Collinet warms things up by taking Afropop Worldwide to northern Madagascar, where Diego Suarez gives the episode its sound and its shadows. Jax starts things off with Saleg Gouma, a city-made Salegui strain pushed by young urban speed. From there, the music keeps bumping into history. Traditional drumming patterns sit beside young stars, and Salegui comes across less like a single beat than a sound shaped by a place. Pierre Larson brings in the harbor's pirate past, with European East India Company ships carrying silver and sometimes gold close enough to tempt buccaneers. Northern Madagascar's bays, reefs, and local knowledge made the coast useful cover, and chasing raiders there was no simple job. Diego Suarez also mattered because of its rare deepwater harbor. That pulled the music's home into wider Indian Ocean politics and then into war. After France fell to Germany in 1940, the French-built port became a British target. Bahwaka remembers the assault from childhood. At seventy-eight, the professor, poet, composer, mathematician, and amateur historian recalls being eight when May 1942 left its mark. The Battle of Diego Suarez lasted twenty-four hours, but shrapnel wounded him and stayed in the story. Even the cemeteries keep talking: French and British soldiers, along with African conscripts, lie on opposite sides of a memory the music still carries.
