"Anyone who belittles you to soothe their own financial ego isn't worth your time."
Hilary Herron opens the show by welcoming Nicole Lappin and sharing how much she has admired her work for years. Lappin responds warmly and says she is honored to be there. Hilary introduces her as a New York Times bestselling author and the founder of Money News Network. Lappin says she is the least likely person to have become a financial reporter, much less the owner of a financial literacy company. She explains that she grew up in an immigrant family as a first-generation American. Money was not something people talked about in her house, so she says she had to figure it out the hard way. She traces part of that education back to the Chicago Merc in Chicago. At first, she thought it was a mall. It turned out to be an exchange where commodities like pork bellies were traded. That experience helps her land on the larger idea that money is a language like any other. People just do not grow up with a Rosetta Stone for it. Once she learned how to speak it, she says she started speaking it to the world. She says she feels honored now to teach other people how to speak the same language. The discussion then shifts from her origin story to money in everyday relationships. Lappin says talking about money and housework with your partner is not the sexiest or easiest conversation, but it matters. She says getting on the same page can save a couple a lot of heartache and future fights. She also says that if both partners are entrepreneurs, or if they share assets like a house, a prenup matters. She frames it as protection and as part of estate planning, not as a prediction that the marriage will fail. Her concern is that a grieving spouse should not be left with business debt, probate problems, or shares in a business that still need to be sorted out. She notes that women are often nervous about the conversation. Her answer is to think about a prenup the same way people think about car insurance or home insurance. It is there to protect what has been built. If someone is the primary breadwinner, she says, that conversation matters even more. The episode closes on that practical note, with Hilary thanking Lappin for the conversation.
